Dr. Joseph Barsuglia

Dr. Joseph Barsuglia is a clinical and research psychologist, advisor in psychedelic medicine and alternative healthcare. His mission is to create safe and sacred settings for the utilization of psychedelic/sacred earth medicines and create bridges for plant-based therapeutics. Professional background includes psychedelic psychotherapy research and delivery, clinical and spiritual psychology, and holistic health products and education.
His expertise is working with ibogaine and 5-MeO-DMT. He served as the Director of Research and CEO at Crossroads Treatment Center in Mexico, a psychedelic treatment center. In this role, Joseph presented the first and largest observational research on 5-MeO-DMT and ibogaine, novel brain imaging data, and developed guidelines for the administration of 5-MeO-DMT.
Joseph recently worked as a co-investigator in phase 2 clinical trials of MDMA-Assisted Psychotherapy for PTSD sponsored by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) in Los Angeles.
He facilitates international retreats with his partner and co-founder Tricia Eastman with Psychedelic Journeys. These immersions include embodied movement practices and sacred ceremonies in idyllic naturalistic locations with local and indigenous practitioners.
His primary therapeutic modalities include Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy, spiritual/archetypal psychology, and divination practices. Joseph is an initiate and student of the African spiritual tradition called ‘Bwiti’ which utilizes the iboga plant as its sacrament for spiritual healing. And iboga is his primary teacher.
He earned a Master’s degree and PhD in clinical psychology with an emphasis in neuropsychology from the Fuller Graduate School of Psychology, and a Master’s degree in Spiritual Theology from the Fuller Theological Seminary. He received advanced clinical training in neuropsychology at the University of Southern California (USC), UCLA, and the West Los Angeles Veterans Hospital. He completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the West Los Angeles Veterans Hospital in aging and behavioral neuroscience. His research is published in multiple peer-reviewed journals.
